The SOFT EARTH

A Tour of the Web for Geoscientists

Software and Software Sites

The Soft Earth is the second part of Web page of internet resources for Geoscientists. The first is The Virtual Earth which is an introduction to the Web, concentrating on starting points for Web exploration, data searches and special Earth Science connections.

The Soft Earth aims to be more of a resource listing for Geoscience software available on the Internet.

As with the Virtual Earth, feel free to peel this document off your browser and modify it to your hearts content. The original can always be obtained by clicking here.

The Soft Earth is mirrored at Oxford University in the U.K. Other mirrors include Mikael Niklasson's page in Sweden, the University of Zaragoza in Spain, and by Sam Toon in Liverpool.

A significant ammount of data and software is available over the Internet by anonymous ftp as this was one of the first methods for transferring files. Some software is available via gopher. The HTTP protocol is capable of accessing both of these types of servers. More recently, a lot of software is being transferred to HTTP servers, and the inventory being stored in searchable databases.

What is provided here are the links to the software. The onus is on the user to ensure they can download files with their preferred browser. The software is for various platforms and is of variable quality.
